Back to School: Tacolicious Begins Another Series of Mmmmm Mondays

a Starr King Elementary School

Starr King Elementary School

At the beginning of September, Tacolicious kicked off the Tacolicious School Project (a.k.a. Mmmmm … Mondays) fundraiser, wherein we give 15 percent of our Monday proceeds to a nearby public school. We did this for the spring semester and had great results. We’ve chosen Potrero Hill’s Starr King Elementary School to be the beneficiary of this month’s proceeds. To find out a bit more about Starr King, we sat down with co-chair of fundraising for Starr King’s PTA, Claudia Assis.

What are the fundraiser’s goals for Starr King and how much are you trying to raise?
We don’t have a numerical goal, but we hope this fundraiser will kickstart new afterschool programs.

Mmmm Mondays began with a letter sent home to Sara and Joe from their kids’ school asking if they could help purchase school supplies. What does Starr King Elementary plan to do with the money that they’ve raised?
This is an added bonus for our budget this year. We’re planning on using the money to support existing programs at the school but to launch new programs too. For example, we are planning an after school math club and we just hired a new garden coordinator who will teach a garden program. Right now, there’s pretty much no greenery in the school yard. The learning garden is going to be accessible for pre-k through 5th grade students. The goals are to teach them about nutrition and sustainability. We even had salad from the garden at our last PTA meeting.

Other than Tacolicious, what’s another favorite taqueria in town?
Principal John loves La Taqueria on Mission and 25th. It’s a great local spot.

If you want to help Starr King build new math and garden after school programs, then grab all your friends (yes, we mean all of them) and head on over to Tacolicious’ Mission District location at 741 Valencia Street.
